The Hills Shire Council serves one of Sydney’s most vibrant and fastest-growing communities, located in the north-west of the city. Known as Sydney’s Garden Shire, the region is celebrated for its green open spaces, outstanding lifestyle, and strong sense of community. The Shire also boasts a rich cultural heritage, with many historic sites and buildings dating back to the early colonial era.
The Council is committed to delivering exceptional services, sound governance and a thriving environment - now and into the future.
About the Role
This is a pivotal governance role at the heart of Council’s accountability framework. Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Internal Auditor provides independent and objective assurance across governance, risk management, compliance and internal controls - working collaboratively with the Executive Team and the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC).
As the successful candidate, you will be comfortable operating in a largely autonomous role, supported by a small team comprising a cadet and limited administrative resources. You are a self-motivated individual who thrives in an independent working environment and demonstrates initiative in managing priorities. You will lead the development and delivery of a risk-based Internal Audit Strategy and multi-year Audit Plan, conduct operational and compliance audits, and provide expert guidance and analysis to the organisation’s most senior leaders. As an advisory member of ARIC, you will play an influential role in shaping a culture of transparency, accountability and continuous improvement across Council.
About You
You are an experienced audit professional who brings credibility, confidence and a collaborative approach to everything you do. You understand the complexity of local government and thrive when given the opportunity to make a real difference to governance outcomes.
You are a clear and compelling communicator, comfortable engaging and influencing at the Executive level, and skilled at translating complex audit findings into meaningful, actionable insights. Your stakeholders trust your judgement, value your advice and see you as a constructive partner.
As expected of such a role, you will bring a Bachelor’s Degree in Auditing, Accounting, Commerce, Management or a related field and have a CPA, CA or relevant professional audit qualification. In addition, you will possess extensive experience in internal audit, risk and governance - ideally within the government sectors.
