Chief Executive Officer
Charters Towers Regional Council serves a community of approximately 12,000 residents across a region that combines deep historical significance with a contemporary economy grounded in agriculture, mining, and regional service delivery. Located 90 minutes from Townsville, the region occupies an important position within North Queensland's inland network and holds enduring cultural and heritage value for its community.
Council is seeking a Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation and work in close partnership with the Mayor and councillors in delivering on the community's priorities.
The Role
Reporting to Council through the Mayor, the Chief Executive Officer carries full operational responsibility for the organisation under the Local Government Act 2009, including the implementation of Council's strategic direction, financial stewardship, policy development, and the leadership of Council's workforce.
The role sits at the intersection of governance and operations. It requires a CEO who can provide clear, consistent, and considered advice to elected members, build and sustain a constructive working relationship with the Mayor, and lead an executive team capable of delivering services that matter to the community.
This is a role that will suit a senior local government leader who understands regional operating environments and who is practised in the working relationship between the CEO role and the elected body.
About You
You are an experienced local government executive with a track record of stable, effective leadership. You have led organisations of comparable scale and complexity, and you understand what it takes to manage the relationship between the CEO role and elected members in a small-community context.
You bring sound financial and commercial judgement, a measured communication style, and the capacity to work constructively with councillors who bring a range of views and priorities. You are practised at giving clear advice on matters where the professional and political considerations may sit in tension, and you have the judgement to navigate those moments with integrity.
You hold relevant tertiary qualifications, have a demonstrated understanding of Queensland local government legislation, and are familiar with the issues facing regional councils — workforce, infrastructure, financial sustainability, and community expectation.
Why This Role
This is a genuinely meaningful CEO appointment in a region with a strong sense of identity and a community that takes a close interest in how it is led. Council is committed to supporting the successful candidate through a considered onboarding process and a stable working arrangement.
Remuneration
A competitive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate, commensurate with experience and the responsibilities of the role.
